What is a loudspeaker?

A loudspeaker, more commonly just called a speaker, is in engineering terms a kind of electroacoustic transducer. In other words, speakers convert electrical signals into musical sound you can hear through the movement of air via sound waves.

The word “speaker” be used to refer to a single speaker driver (individual tweeter, woofer, etc.) as well as a speaker system that is made up of 2 or more individual units. A speaker system often includes an enclosure to capture sound waves and make the production of midrange and bass frequencies possible.

Although there’s a wide range of speaker types, the most common are electromagnetic, consisting of a wound wire coil (voice coil), a permanent magnet assembly, a cone to move air, and a frame attached to suspension parts to hold the assembly in place.
